Make a Difference (MAD) Scheme
All Sixth Form students at JIS are expected to give something back to their school or community during their time as senior members of the student body. During the first two terms of the academic year all Year 12 and Year 13 students should contribute one hour or one period a week towards “making a difference”.
The Sixth Form students are currently contributing to many areas of both school and community life. They provide in-class learning support to classes lower down the school, tutoring students in subjects such as mathematics and Bahasa Malay. They also help to support the children in Junior School classes and they play a very active role in helping to organise activities in the After School Care Club. Many students help with the running of an After School Activity (ASA), for example, coaching a sports team, carrying out mosque supervision or even encouraging students to try theatre sports for the first time!
The students’ contributions are recognised within the school and each student receives a MAD certificate each term, outlining their role and performance in each activity undertaken. The references written for students as they leave the school and apply for tertiary education also include their MAD contributions, thus increasing the opportunity to highlight their ability to ‘make a difference’ as they apply to competitive courses and institutions.
